Kids always come first, and I treat employees like family so there really isn’t much balance. But I do read when I’m overwhelmed, mostly leadership or family-based books. It allows me to focus on what’s important and prioritize my actions.

“I try and keep my kids engaged by sharing a little science with them. I subscribe to a science & experiment kits service so that we can enjoy some scientific principles together by doing simple experiments monthly. I presented at their school during career week to help motivate the kids to pursue science. I often try to leave work at a good time to have some time to spend with the family and at least enjoy dinner with them daily, even if that means doing some work at home in the evening. It’s important to make sure that you are always present for the family as a father, and never let work be the excuse for not being there for your family. Work comes and goes, but family is life!

“The cannabis testing space is very demanding. We live, breathe, eat and sleep customer service here at CannaSafe, so the work week is pretty much non-stop. Because of this, weekends are absolutely precious. My weekends are committed to my three little princesses. We spend as much time together riding bikes, going to the beach, and partaking in our favorite weekend tradition… Sunday evening In-N-Out burgers.

“Working at CannaSafe is an interesting job since we as a company make sure that whatever goes out in the cannabis market is safe for consumption, and there is a lot of work that is done on the backend from start to finish. My work in accounting ensures that we keep our records up to date and all entries are posted in the timely manner and 100% correct. With all these responsibilities at work, I still make time to exercise and spend quality time with my family. I spend weekends with my family hiking, going to the beach, and playing FIFA on PS4 with my 13-year-old son. I have a 4-year-old daughter who sometimes paints my toenails and puts makeup on my face. I try my very best to do cooking on Saturday for dinner and say thank you to my beautiful wife. She does a lot for us during the week.

“I’ve been blessed with two children, now 16 and 14, and am coming up on my 20th wedding anniversary. I’ve also had a very demanding career with a lot of twelve-hour days and time on the road. First, make sure that you give the same level of attention to your wife and children as you do to a business partner. Give your family that same level of focus. Listen to them. Talk to them. Be involved in what they are interested in. Second, be there. Yes, there is quality time, but quantity counts too, especially when they are very young. Make sure that you have regular one-on-one time with your kids and your wife. Just do things with them. Time is your currency to spend. Spend your currency on your family. Put the phone away. Focus on them. Finally, just before I got married, I asked the older men in the office for advice. I’ve kept one piece in mind ever since. Remember to enjoy the moment.

“If I’m being honest, I work long hours and get home late most evenings, but I make sure I spend quality time with my three kids whenever I can and on the weekends. I try to drop off my son at school whenever possible. Some evenings I play video games with my oldest daughter after the little ones go to bed, and we all usually ride our bikes or walk the dog together on the weekends. They also like helping me out around the yard with things like cutting and raking the leaves, hosing down the patio, and whatever else I’m doing. It’s great to spend that time together and they learn some skills and how to be helpful.

“This is easier now with both my kids having graduated college and working themselves. Now comes the reward of the work-life balancing act all these years. My daughter married last year and expecting my first grandchild. Grown children doesn’t mean dad duties go away. You work to guide your children as they grow up. Now they ask for my guidance. I am blessed that my kids want my advice at this stage of their lives.

“As a father, I try my best to be consistent with time and to be present at home for my two beautiful kids – Paarth (9-month-old baby boy) and Priyanvi 2 years and 9 months (Daddy’s girl). This is only possible if I prioritize my time so I can achieve my set work goals (KPIs) and family goals. I make it a point to enjoy play time with my kids. They are such a destress!
