It was incredibly difficult to buy cannabis 30 years ago. It was not only incredibly expensive but it was, of course, illegal too. However, times are most definitely changing. Not only are we able to purchase cannabis with greater ease but more effort is being put in when it comes to determining exactly what is found within the cannabis that we are consuming. This is important in terms of minimizing the risks and ensuring that we are getting the benefits that we are aiming for. There are a number of different cannabis testing laboratories around the country that are carrying out cannabinoid potency analysis so that they can measure precisely the compounds that are found within cannabis. This enables them to determine what products can have the most powerful impact as well as determining what strains of cannabis are going to be safe to consume.

One of the most exciting and innovative areas of the new legal cannabis sector is being able to quantify the compounds that are contained in a cannabis plant. All of this data  and information is enabling us to become much more knowledgeable about the cannabis plant. It is no longer a mystery, which is smuggled illegally across borders. Instead, it has become arguably the most interesting and popular area of scientific analysis into the different medical and therapeutic values that are potentially associated with it.

There are currently 33 laboratories that have been set up for cannabis testing in California. The cannabis that is acquired via legal means will have been tested in one of these laboratories. This is the main difference between the cannabis that is sold via legal means and the cannabis that is sold on the blackmarket.

What is ‘potency’?

Potency is a term that is used to measure the drug activity expressed in terms of the amount of the drugs that is needed to create an effect of given intensity. It is all about the medicinal strength or efficacy of the drug. In basic terms, if a drug is potent, then it means that it is powerful.

We have all seen that cannabis is becoming legalized in an increasing number of places around the world. The main reason is because there are a number of health benefits that have been reported. This includes the reduction of seizures, anti-nausea, and general pain reduction. Because of this, it is important that potency analysis is carried out to ensure that the products are labelled properly both in the recreational and medical cannabis markets. After all, people take cannabis products for different reasons, and so it is essential that an individual is consuming cannabis that has the right level of potency for their needs. This is especially the case when health professionals are prescribing cannabis products to their patients.

Some of the main compounds that are found within cannabis are as follows:

  • CBC – Cannabichromene
  • CBN – Cannabinol
  • CBGA – Cannabigerolic acid
  • CBG – Cannabigerol
  • CBDV – Cannabidivarin
  • CBDA – Cannabidiolic acid
  • CBD – Cannabidiol
  • THCV – Tetrahydrocannabivarin
  • THCA – d9-Tetrahydrocannnabinolic acid
  • d8-THC – d8-Tetrahydrocannnabinoid
  • d9-THC – d9-Tetrahydrocannnabinoid

Different methods used

There are a number of different methods that are used to determine how potent cannabis products are. This includes the likes of the High Resolution Method, the High Sensitivity Method, and the High Throughput Method. The method that is utilized will depend on the size of the sample, as well as the laboratory and the equipment and facilities that they have available.

For example, the High Resolution Method is required for baseline separation of 11 or more components, including THCV. This tends to be the preferred method when research is being performed, state regulations change, or additional compounds are being added. On the other hand, with the High Sensitivity Method, this is suitable when experts are looking for the sharpest chromatographic peaks and the best sensitivity. It is also suitable when THCV is vital yet a good sample is needed throughout. High Throughput Methods do exactly what you would expect; they are suitable when a high sample throughput is needed. These methods have been designed in collaboration with commercial testing labs.
